We have an excellent optical department here at Vision Care Associates. Two certified, full time opticians will help you determine your eye wear needs and educate you on the options that are now available for glasses, sunglasses, sports eye wear and contacts.
We carry a large variety of frames for men, women and children. We also have a large selection of well known designer frames, including some that are exclusive to Ft. Wayne. Our sunglass collection is extensive, and several styles can be custom made to your prescription.
If you wear contacts, we stock several disposable lenses right in our optical. We have trial sets for bifocal contacts and toric disposable contacts. We also fit gas permeable contacts for single vision, astigmatism, and bifocal wearers.
Different types of lenses
Hi-index lenses: Hi-index plastic lenses are good for a lot of people. Hi-index lenses are thinner and lighter than regular glass or plastic lenses. If you have a hi-index plastic lens, it is about 20-25% thinner and lighter than regular plastic lenses. The hi-index lenses also have a scratch resistant coating and an ultraviolet protection already built in. Hi-index glass is also available for those diehard glass lens wearers.
Polycarbonate lenses: Polycarbonate lenses are the most impact resistant. This type of lens is recommended for children, safety glass wearers, and sports eye wear. Along with being thinner and lighter than glass or plastic, Polycarbonate lenses also have a scratch resistant coating and an ultraviolet protection already built in.
Different lens options
Anti-reflective coating: An anti-reflective (A/R) coating helps in many ways:
Polarized Sunglasses: Polarized lenses give the wearer more glare protection in the sunlight. Water, snow and pavements create glare that is straining to your eyes. Polarized lenses eliminate 99% of the horizontal glare that these elements cause. Regular tinted lenses just darken what you see and mask the real problem, the glare. Polarized lenses give you clearer, sharper vision with less eyestrain. Once you have tried a polarized lens, you will never have a sunglass with a regular lens. Polarized lenses have 100% UV protection also.
Scratch resistant coating: This coating makes a plastic lens harder to scratch, but it does not make it impossible to scratch. No material is 100% scratch proof. If you have a scratch resistant coating on the lenses, there is a 1-year warranty.
Ultra-Violet filter: A UV filter keeps the ultra-violet light from entering the eye. These rays have been known to cause cataracts. The UV filter will also help to protect the retina, the macula and the sensitive skin under your eyes.
Transition lenses: These are a plastic or a polycarbonate lens that have a very light tint, and then become darker outside. They will not get dark in a car, however, since they need ultra-violet light to change.
